headless

Poor nymph, her head seems to be long gone and she sits patiently sightless, deaf and dumb in Crystal Palace Park, South London - on the site of the original Crystal Palace itself.

A statue rather to match my mood at the moment,

but I really don't want to be a miserable blogger, so here is another statue of a less gloomy kind:

Not only headless but armless too, but she looks as though she could be having a bit more fun than poor nymph...

This is a Thursday Theme post - details here.

1. Headless nymph, in Crystal Palace Park, South London
2. "Mankind" by Eric Gill, in the Victoria & Albert museum.

I was once in London for six hours but never left Heathrow.

Maybe someday.

Thanks for playing! I've been here before, from the mouse house, but it's been a while, must catch up!

I like it, and who doesn't feel like that a lot in their lives!

Thanks 4 joining in!

Cheers!

She definitely could have more fun than the other one, even without arms, lol.

What I really liked about London and U.K in general it's the old cemetaries and old statues like that.I miss London. When I was over there,I've never seen that one though..

Headless, armless and still steeped in history and allure, two things I love about London!

Who doesn't like the occasional tickle? Cheer up! Did you get something in the mail from me?

I see on that second one they put her crotch at eye level...hmmm

I've just read your previous post "work pants" and I see why this statue appeals! This is going to be a strange and challenging year for most of us, I think. We just have to hold on and get through it somehow and try to enjoy it as much as we can. Easy to write slightly more tricky to achieve!

I do believe that bloke with the boob duster is lingering a bit long....

I prefer the headless nymph in Crystal Palace- she still looks knowing even without her head. I think her head is there- its just invisible to the rest of us.

hm... at least, both of these have solved the problem of too much thinking. (Wonder if this is what they mean when they talk of mindlessness?)

be well, letty.

I'm with RL --too much thinking --this could be a very zen post, couldn't it?

Maybe Megan will travel with me when I visit London. But first we must get busy & win the lotto jackpot.

much snow?

Headless nymph allows one to concentrate on the finer details of the rest of the statue.

I've been to London, but not to either of these two locations, maybe next time.

Mama said there'd be days like this. Keep breathing ... you can because you do still have a (beautiful) head.

Akelamalu said...

I wish I had a figure like that second one, though it's not worth losing your head for! (LOL sorry )

Barbara said...

You have to wonder what happened to all those missing parts!

Lynne said...

I feel sorry for the poor girl in the second photo. That guy is tickling the heck out of her and she doesn't have arms or hands to slap him silly. Stop that! That tickles! Truly a great shot Letty! :)

oh dear megan. You didn't see the best of the UK then.

CM - :-)

I guess we take them for granted Candie, there are a lot of them sitting around!

have you visited much e?

Feeling cheerier, T-T. Something awaits me at the post office apparently...

Ha! tis true VE. Lots of bottoms, crotches and other bits at eye-level in the V&A

Yes DD. I think it can be done.

Mouse, he did indeed seem to be taking both care and time over it
(what a job, eh?)

Cinnamon i love your comment! I wonder if all the parts are still there invisibly on all the statues?

RLB, its one approach isn't it? rather different from the headlessness of a chicken tho

AR, please come. Yes LOTS. Pics in my next post.

Dakota Bear, it does change one's focus, true

Still breathing Reya. (Friday today, yay!)

hah! me too, Akelamalu, she is quite gorgeous.

Barbara, I'm pretty sure the second was made that way, but its an intriguing question

Lynne, your comment made me larf.

LOL! Gotta love that second pic!

There's a little something for you over at my place :-)

Steve Reed said...

Ha! I love that second photo! Nude statue skin care!

I wonder if the nymph once had a head? Or was she meant to be that way? That would have been quite avant-garde.

Anonymous said...

I like 'em both. The first has more atmosphere, and the second--well, the tickle jokes have already been done.

Nice pair! ;-)

Tickling a statue every now and again seems like it wouldn't be the worst way to pass the time. Whenever we go to the museum with our first graders they always giggle at the nude statues. This is all they would need to see to totally lose it - or be horrified - could go either way.

Hope you are not too miserable :(

Hi Lettuce,

Back in the day, I had my birthday in both London and Paris. I awoke in one and went to sleep in the other. I was there with the parents for about a week, and remember falling asleep on the stairs of Harrod's (unless my memory's gone bad...)because we walked all over the place and I was knackered as the Brits say...

Dot-Com said...

Looks like I'll be heading to London either next week or the week after that - maybe I'll see the headless statue!

lettuce said...

thanks Vanilla. :-)

wouldn't it just, steve? ha!

thanks A Decker. and hello.

Gary I love watching the people looking as much as I love seeing the artwork. I'm doing okay thanks.

that sounds like a glamorous birthday e. as well as knackering.

Dot-Com - hello! hope its a great trip.

I went to college (university to you) in a town where the circus magnates the Ringling brothers had built a mansion (turned museum). There was a forbidden area where every student who had a camera eventually found themselves- the brothers (or it may have been just one of them) had brought a shipload of statues over from Italy, in an attempt to acquire culture wholesale. Most of them were never placed, and they were left promiscuously crowded together, some headless, and all affected to some extent by the luxuriant Floridian flora.

So, ArtSparker, give! Where's the pictures?!

lettuce said...

Betty! you were there at the taking of both, weren't you? :-)

ah pod. thanks love.

and, yeah ArtSparker, give!
