metaphorical?

We've been together for quite a long time.

Years and years.

You'd think we'd be comfortable with each other by now, that we'd have grown into shapes that fit - learned each others ins and outs, developed compatible habits and ways of breathing.

We'll be together so much over the coming months.
In rain and biting winds and frost. Maybe even in snow.

So why do we rub up against each other in such painful ways?

Are we incompatible?

But I know that after this annual, seasonal initiation we'll be good together and you'll keep me warm and dry - you have in the past, year after year. I still have faith in you.

So how - why - do you rub me raw? Quickly and imperceptibly. I'm numb to the discomfort until it is too late. Until it becomes pain.

Maybe its my fault. I need to loosen up, not pull so tight. Perhaps we need more space between us?

I hope we'll settle down and travel well together in the future. I think we can. I know old patterns can repeat themselves, taking on a life of their own. But I refuse to accept that the past predetermines the future.

The future is not set.

In the meantime.....

the blisters bloody hurt.

Are those Fluevogs? I used to wear their angel boots all the time. These days I go for Salomon or Ecco boots since they're truly waterproof and don't rub me the wrong way.

They aren't nearly as cute as Fluevog angel boots, though.

Yours are darling. Too bad they're not better behaved!

Naughty little boots. Tell them you're gonna pull their tongues out if they don't behave, and then their soles will never get to heaven.

You're going to catch it for taking this photo. Already the SSG (Shoe Security Guards) are approaching, their arms waving. Hey! They are shouting. This area is restricted. No one gets through without a pass from Pod.

Oh that was such a clever post Lettie, but you're not hanging up your DOCS, no way!!

Cherry red Docs at that.
I don't think you've been giving them enough attention have you.

Hee!
One thin pair of cotton socks under a thick pair of socks usually = no blisters!

After I left that comment yesterday I went on to the Fluevog website and ended up buying a very expensive pair of totally hilarious shoes. I shouldn't have ... but ... how fun! I'll wear them next spring when you come to the U.S.

What a wonderful story twist. I never thought it to be boots until I got to the picture. Them everything became clear. Not that's a sign of a good writer!

quite a fetching pair of boots! and yes, unless your feet have unexpectedly grown, the blisters (from not enough wear) will disappear and once more mold to your feet and these beautiful shoes will become one... until then just always select the best sock for the day's activity! fun post! oh how I love a good pair of shoes.

Here I was thinking that there was trouble in paradise. How clever you are to lead me astray only to dash my illusions and hit me unawares with something different altogether.

Must say though...I love the shoes. Maybe the pain is worth it?

PS I've posted another Nursery Rhyme Quiz today if you fancy a go. :)

Great boots!

My steel-capped boots are referred to by my daughter as 'Dad's man boots'. This is ridiculous, of course, they are Fred and Charlie.

Lovely boots Lettie. Lovely post. I'm so sorry I missed you this week and RW too. :( I'm feeling a little better today. First day I've managed to leave the house! Pod got me the best ever slippers, so I've been wearing those.

I love DMs. They make really cool shoes now too. One of the shoes that say so much I reckon. Cherry red ones are really lovely.

You are a clever onexx
